An essay about "plagiarism"

Plagiarism is using someone else’s work, words, production, researches and ideas without the approval or the acknowledgment of the writer or producer, and claiming the credit for themselves. To plagiarize means to steal someone else’s idea or part of work and use it as your own. Brief quotes or use of cited sources do not constitute plagiarism. The original author can bring a lawsuit for appropriation of his/her work against the plagiarist and recover the profits.

There are two major kinds of harm plagiarism causes. First, it is something as simple as stealing and lying – you just steal someone else’s work and trick somebody into believing it was you who had written it, which is as immoral as any other kind of theft is. It means that somebody had actually spent time and effort in order to create something, while you did nothing but ripping it off and submitting it.

Second, it is a crime you commit against yourself. If you study at an educational institution, there are certain tasks you are given in order to ensure that you learn something. When you resort to plagiarism, you undo all these efforts for, instead of actually doing something and understanding it in process, you use someone else’s work and the certain amount of experience that you were supposed to get just misses you.

Plagiarism can happen intentionally or unintentionally when a person uses another person's ideas or words without citing the original source. There are four common forms of plagiarism. Copying another person's words without using quotation marks or referencing the original source, copying an author's words without using quotation marks but using accurate footnotes to the original source, paraphrasing an author's ideas without including a reference to the original source and Rearranging an author's exact words, even if there is a footnote to the original source.

There are types of punishments you can get if you do plagiarize. Minor plagiarism is a small sentence or short paragraph of another manuscript is plagiarized without any significant data or idea taken from the other papers or publications. Punishment you can get is  a warning given to the authors and a request to change the manuscript and properly cite the original sources.

Intermediate Plagiarism is plagiarism to significant data, paragraph, or sentence of a article without proper citation to the original source. The punishment given is submitted article is automatic rejected.

Severe Plagiarism is a large portion of an article is plagiarized that involves many aspects such as reproducing original results (data, formulation, equation, law, statement, etc.), ideas, and methods presented in other publications. Punishment given is the paper is automatic rejected and the authors are forbidden to submit further articles to Science and Technology Indonesia.
