World Literature Timeline
Invention of Writing and Earliest Literature [Beginnings to 100 A.D.] Writing was not invented for the purpose of preserving literature; the earliest written documents contain commercial, administrative, political, and legal information, and were created by the first "advanced" civilizations in an area that Westerners commonly call the Middle East. The oldest writing was pictographic, meaning that the sign for an object was written to resemble the object itself; later, hieroglyphic and cuneiform scripts were invented to record more complicated information. Begun in 2700 B.C. and written down about 2000 B.C., the first great heroic narrative of world literature, Gilgamesh , nearly vanished from memory when it was not translated from cuneiform languages into the new alphabets that replaced them. Though the absence of written signs for vowels can confuse some readers, the consonantal script developed by the Hebrew...

An essay about "plagiarism"
Plagiarism is using someone else’s work, words, production, researches and ideas without the approval or the acknowledgment of the writer or producer, and claiming the credit for themselves. To plagiarize means to steal someone else’s idea or part of work and use it as your own. Brief quotes or use of cited sources do not constitute plagiarism. The original author can bring a lawsuit for appropriation of his/her work against the plagiarist and recover the profits. There are two major kinds of harm plagiarism causes. First, it is something as simple as stealing and lying – you just steal someone else’s work and trick somebody into believing it was you who had written it, which is as immoral as any other kind of theft is. It means that somebody had actually spent time and effort in order to create something, while you did nothing but ripping it off and submitting it. Second, it is a crime you commit against yourself. If you study at an educational institution, there are certain ...
