WHAT WE CAN LEARN FROM EMMA WATSON'S SPEECH
Emma Watson is a British actor, best known for her role as the iconic Hermione Granger in Harry Potter films. Since the complrtion of eight series of the films, Emma has shown her versality as a performer.
Watson was appointed UN Women Goodwill Ambassador in July 2014. She will dedicate her efforts towards the empowerment of young women and will serve as an advocate for UN Women’s “HeForShe” campaign promoting gender equality.
At the age of 24, Watson has already been involved in the promotion of girls’ education for several years and prefiously visited Bangladesh and Zambia as part of her humanitarian efforts.
In Sptember 2014, Emma delivered an impassioned introduction to the HeForShe campaign at the UN Headquarters in New York. Since then, her speech has received heavy circulation on social media and been hailed by the press as “powerful” and “game changing”. How did she do it?
Firstly, Emma made clear from the very beginning that her speech was intended for the men and boys who could become advocates for change. She appealed not just to their sense of right and wrong, but also to the impact of gender inequality on men’s lifes. She explicitly invited them to step forward and become the part of the solution.
She expressed the difference between the world today and what it could be. Speakers can create powerful emotion by creating a clear contrast between “what is” today and “what could be” tomorrow. Watson did this perfectly by made it personal, she used story from their own life to add the emotions.
At the end, she called for clear action. Watson spoke to this from the beginning when she said “I am reaching out to you because I need your help. We want to end gender inequality, and to do that, we need everyone to be involved.” She add urgency to this plea by ending with a reminder that anyone and everyone can be part of the change. It made no audience vould walk away without asking themselves “if not me, who? If not now, when?”
